We all know that cell phone batteries don’t last for an extremely long time. However, the number of charge cycles you get before replacement is necessary can vary greatly from about 300 to 800 depending on how you take care of your cell phone battery. In addition, how you care for your cell phone batteries can affect performance between charges. Since everyone of course wants their batteries to last a long time and achieve maximum performance, here are 5 great tips to help you protect and get the most use out of your cell phone batteries.

1. Don’t charge the battery constantly (in other words, don’t leave the charger or cradle plugged in all the time). This can reduce the life of the battery, so you really should only plug the charger in when necessary.

2. Li-Ion batteries do not have a memory effect. This means after the first couple of charge cycles you don’t have to let them drain all the way before recharging again. If you have a Ni-MH or Ni-CD cell phone battery however, then you should fully charge and discharge it at least once every two to three weeks. Failure to do this can shorten the battery life significantly.

3. You should try and keep the battery contacts clean. If they appear dirty, try cleaning the contacts with either a soft cloth or alcohol and a cotton swab to help maintain a good connection.

4. Always charge a brand new battery fully before using it the first time. Batteries typically take at least 2 to 4 full charge / discharge cycles after that to achieve maximum capacity. Also, new batteries can sometimes be hard to fully charge at first. In some cases the device’s charger might stop charging your cell phone battery before it is fully charged. If you experience this, then just remove the battery from the device, reinsert it, and continue charging. Sometimes you may have to do this a couple times during the initial charge.

5. Do not hit, drop, or abuse the battery in such manner as this could result in exposure to the corrosive cell contents.

When your cell phone battery does die, be sure to dispose of it properly. You can recycle it by going to Call2Recycle at RBRC.org. If you then still want to use your cell phone, you simply need to get a new battery. Most of us already know that thousands of electronic devices are thrown into landfills every year, which ultimately can’t be good for the environment. By continuing to use your cell phone (or donating, recycling, or selling it when you are done), you are doing your part in helping our planet.

You can get your cell phone batteries at Infinity Batteries, where you can find one of the largest selections of cell phone batteries at great prices.

Marco Bellino, an award-winning freelance Symbian C++ Developer from the Turin Area of Italy provides Guardian, a new antitheft software system for Symbian Series 60 devices. Bellino’s software is not only of the highest quality. It is FREE of charge and comes highly recommended for those interested in protecting their cell phone/ smartphone investments.

Every time you switch on your mobile telephone, Guardian proceeds with authentication of the inserted sim card; if authentication fails, Guardian send a notification sms message to a previously set telephone number. In addition, the system features remote control functions, i.e. deleting your photographs/ phone book/ text messages/ video/ audio data, in case of loss or theft of your mobile phone.

All the SMS sent/ received by Guardian will not notified in any way to the user — there are no icons, no lights, no sounds, no vibrations, nothing visibile in inbox/sent/outbox messages folder, and of course, no traces left in logs.

Here are the main features of Guardian, the only existing application of its kind today:

- SMS Notification -

Guardian automatically sends an SMS notification about the change of the sim card containing additional information (new owner’s phone number, GSM cell ID of the terminal to which the telephone is connected, country ID and current network). Such SMS messages are sent without notifying the new user (e.g., the thief).

- AutoStart -

Guardian autoruns every time you turn on your mobile phone; to be fully operative, users simply need to install it and set it up.

- AutoHiding -

When an unauthorized sim card is inserted (or in case the mobile phone is turned on without any sim card inserted), the program will switch to invisible mode (and therefore will not be accessible anymore). The new user will not be aware of the presence of an antitheft system. When an authorized SIM card is inserted, Guardian will return to visible mode.

- Multilanguage -

Guardian includes multilanguage features; Just download the correct version for your language.

- Uninstall Protection -

This feature protects the system from unauthorized uninstallation. The program is not visible among the installed programs; to be uninstalled, a specific procedure is required, which may be accessed from the program only.

- Hard Reset Protection -

Modern mobile devices are equipped with a procedure (hard-reset) which allows to restore default settings (removing every installed software). Similar antitheft software programs may be blocked by using this procedure. Guardian features an advanced shadow copy system; in 90% of cases the program is not deleted after a hard-reset.

- Low Overhead -

During the day-to-day usage of the phone with an authorized SIM, Guardian will not use any memory resource, and it will not even run in the backround. The program will start every time the phone is turned on and if the SIM is authorized it will simply turn off without wasting any resource.

(*) Remote Control Plugins

Once a SIM card change has been notified, users may send SMS commands to Guardian.
- Recover your SMS and your Phonebook’s contacts from your stolen mobile.
- Gain informations about the thief, monitoring his activities like sent and received SMS, incoming and outgoing calls, phonebooks contacts added.
- Track the movements of your mobile, using the GSM cell-id localization.
- Protect your Privacy deleting contents from your stolen mobile (SMS, contacts, images, videos, audios)
- Lock your Phone or your SIM to avoid anyone using it.
- Guardian is all this and much more…

(*) SIM White List

A maximum of 10 authorized sim cards can be registered.

(*) MultiSim system and Plugin support will be activated only for those users who will contribute to the growth of the project with a donation. Once your donation has been received, you will receive the instructions to receive a Donation Code. The code is univocally related to your mobile telephone and is compatible with all current and future Guardian’s updates.

- More Information -
The previous version does not need to be uninstalled. The installation of this version guarantees a correct update of Guardian system. At the end of the installation, wait a few seconds before launching the program; otherwise, an error message “File impossible to delete” will appear.

BTY: Guaridan 3rd Edition development has been completed and soon will start the distribution. Guardian is compatible with all Series60 3rd Edition devices (3250, 5500, 5700, 6110, 6120, 6121, 6290, E50, E51, E60, E61, E62, E65, E70, E90, N71, N73, N75, N76, N80, N81, N82, N91, N92, N93, N95).

Wall Street Journal reporter Lee Gomes recently wrote an article about reading an e-book on his Blackberry and, unlike several other reviews of the e-book experience, his was actually quite favorable (you can read it here).

A heated debate has raged for years about whether or not the printed page is a thing of the past, from newspapers to magazines to books. However, to paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of these deaths have been greatly exaggerated – or are, at the very least, premature.

” . . . E-book readers for our computers have been around for years, but convenience, eye-strain and a myriad of other factors have hindered their broad adoption . . .”

- Steve Maclin

Two recent developments, however, have pushed on-screen reading back to the forefront and signal an interesting opportunity for e-book readers.

First, there’s Apple’s introduction of the iphone, which got the masses thinking about what’s possible, including reading, on an easily portable device.

Perhaps more important has been the introduction of other new devices such as the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader, and they’re really turning heads!

Both are small and light, both use new technology that makes each device read more like paper than a screen, and the Kindle allows fast downloads wherever cell service is available. Gomes even mentioned in his WSJ article that it was much better ergonomically to read something on his BlackBerry screen than it was to hold a book.

The Kindle is currently the most popular e-book reader option. While it currently works exclusively with content delivered via Amazon, it’s helping to rapidly expand e-book readership, and like a rising tide floats all boats, that’s good for all of us.

smartphones, which use the Kindle, are equipped with complete operating systems that determine what kinds of functions and applications are available for that device. They provide a convenient way to carry several hand-held digital devices in one body. They allow you to easily sync e-mail accounts so you can get e-mail messages as they arrive on your phone, but they also allow you to view e-mail attachments and read e-books on the web.

Clearly, this is all good news for e-book readers/ publishers and smartphone owners. As more and more consumers become acclimated to reading a variety of materials on a screen rather than on a printed page, and as PDAs and other smartphone devices make it more and more convenient, the market for digitally delivered books, magazines, and newsletters across multiple platforms will only continue to grow.

Suffice it to say, “smartphones are so smart” as evidenced by the fact that these feature-packed mobile phones are becoming so pervasive, so overwhelmingly useful, that they could very easily become the default physical interface for ubiquitous computing applications, providing the foundation for a new, interaction paradigm. Try saying that three times real fast!

smartphone/ PDA/ computer sitting in your pocket, purse, or backpack...

Nokia’s smartphones pack a powerful computer into a tight little package.

Matter of fact, I’d go so far as to argue that Nokia smartphones are far better as compared to every other smartphone manufacturer on the market today. The Symbian operating system (OS) on Nokia phones is time tested and seems to have lived up to its users’ expectations thus far. Their smartphones look better on paper, and actually outsell (about 100 times more than) the iphone!

Nokia’s E Series phones are an absolute triumph in terms of their features, especially for those who use their phones to actually do work.

Now, unlike your desktop or laptop, these small computers can be connected to the Internet all the time, and can interact with the world around it through their camera, voice recognition, and traditional phone keypads.

OK, so you’re not going to get free Nokia ringtones — but their smartphones combine these aforementioned features with impressive storage options and a host of networking protocols that make this smallest computer the only thing a road warrior (like myself) truly needs.

If you’re still cracking open your laptop or pining for your desktop while you’re on the road, you haven’t begun to unlock your Nokia’s full potential. Even thought the Nokia smartphone is not your typical “delayed flight to Cleveland,” the recently published Nokia Smartphone Hacks is dedicated to tricking out your Nokia smartphone and finding all the capabilities lurking underneath its surface.

Really cool book, and in it, you’ll learn how to:

- Unlock your phone so that you can use it with any carrier
- Avoid and recover from malicious mobile software
- Watch DVD movies on the phone
- Use the phone as a remote control
- Use the phone as a data modem for your notebook
- Check your email and browse the web
- Post to your weblog from your phone
- Record phone conversations
- Choose mobile service plans, and/ or
- Transfer files between the phone and your computer

Whether you want to use your smartphone as your lifeline while you’re on the road, or you’re just looking for a way to make the most of the time you spend waiting in lines, you’ll find all the user-friendly tips, tools, and tricks you need to become massively productive with your Nokia smartphone.

I don’t normally do this, as those of you who read my blog well know, but I just finished reading an extremely interesting post on canceling your credit card. Seems it was written by this guy, Bob Rankin, who simply wanted to lessen his load (as I’m sure many of us do, these days) by canceling a credit card, one that he no longer needed; by the way, there was no balance due on the card at the time of his phone call (not sure if he used a cell phone or not, but the call was recorded and relevant parts of the conversation are transcribed in his post).

If you’re looking to cancel one or more of your credit cards, do yourself a real favor and read Rankin’s real life story and suggestion! If you’re like me, and are looking for ways to improve your credit score, his post will certainly make your life a lot easier!

Now, I can’t vouch for the guy in the video below (not the same guy as above), but it seems he’s also interested in canceling his credit card to improve his credit score; might be interesting…

First of all, the criteria for issuing an AMBER Alert differ from state-to-state, although the guidelines for a set of minimum criteria was issued by the Department of Justice, to which most states adhere closely...

It’s easy to understand how the criteria for issuing an AMBER Alert could be slightly confusing, given that AMBER stands for “America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response,” even though it is not a system designed for simply missing children… The AMBER Alert system was designed specifically for abducted children.

First of all, the criteria for issuing an AMBER Alert differ from state-to-state, although the guidelines for a set of minimum criteria was issued by the Department of Justice after the PROTECT Act, passed in 2003, to which most states adhere closely.

The Department of Justice’s Guidance on Criteria for Issuing AMBER Alerts are as follows:

1. Law enforcement must confirm that an abduction has taken place
This means that someone must have witnessed the abduction of the child.

2. The child is at risk of serious injury or death
In most cases, a child is abducted by someone they know; In the most dangerous cases, they are abducted by a stranger. Law enforcement may evaluate a child’s risk dependent on whom the abductor is.

3. There is sufficient descriptive information of child, captor or captor’s vehicle to issue an Alert
Depending on the state in which the alert is being issued, the minimum information needed may be the license plate number.

4. The child must be 17-years-old or younger
This is the variable that ranges most from state-to-state, some having set the age at 10 or younger.

5. It is recommended that immediate entry of AMBER Alert data be entered into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Text information describing the circumstances surrounding the abduction of the child should be entered, and the case flagged as Child Abduction.
The NCIC is a computerized database of documented criminal justice information available to virtually every law enforcement agency nationwide, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

If these criteria are met, alert information is assembled for public distribution. This information may include descriptions and pictures of the missing child, the suspected abductor, and a suspected vehicle along with any other information available and valuable to identifying the child and suspect.

All these restrictions may lead one to wonder if their missing child is insignificant… Absolutely not!

However, the circumstances by which a child typically becomes missing, i.e., wandering off by mistake, running away after an argument, et cetera, place state or nationwide lookouts for a child at deathly risk and can be excessive.

AMBER Alerts are heard on the radio, seen on the television, on the internet (for instance, on this site), or even displayed on freeway bulletins or sent as text-messages to cell phones. There are many measures in place, from government to local levels to retrieve a missing child.

Advocates for missing children are concerned that the public is becoming desensitized to AMBER Alerts because of a large number of false alarms, in those instances where police have been known to issue an AMBER Alert without strictly adhering to the Department of Justice’s activation guidelines.

For example, only 70 of the 233 AMBER Alerts issued in 2004 (30%) were actually children taken by strangers or who were unlawfully traveling with adults other than their legal guardians.

In either case, whether a child is “missing” or has been “abducted,” the important thing to keep in mind is that you should contact your local law enforcement agents and be ready to provide them with solid, accurate and current information.

The “criminal sexual conduct involving a minor” language in this definition covers sexual offenses whose elements involve physical contact with the victim. Such as provisions defining crimes of “rape”...

Upon visiting the U.S. government’s AMBER Alert website, the first thing you’ll see is two links. The first of which points to the National Sex Offender Public Registry dedicated to Dru Sjodin, a college student who was kidnapped and murdered by a registered tier III sex offender in 2003. The registry was set up in 2006 after legislation dubbed “Dru’s Law” was passed.

Why it took the victimization of a 22 year-old woman to inspire a program that revolves around sex crimes committed against children is a good question, but beside the point. And we don’t want to falsely label these convicted sex offenders as suspects in AMBER Alert cases, but there is a reason the AMBER program and the National Sex Offender Public Registry are linked to each other.

Registration provides a system for tracking sex offenders following their release into the community. If a sexually violent crime occurs or a child is molested, the information available to law enforcement about sex offenders who may have been present in the area could help to identify the perpetrator and solve the crime. If a particular released sex offender is suspected in such a crime, knowledge of the sex offender’s whereabouts through the registry could help law enforcement make a quick apprehension.

The National Sex Offender Public Registry operates under the guidelines of the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act (“the Wetterling Act”), focusing on information about people convicted of offenses involving sexual molestation or sexual exploitation of children, and people convicted of rape and rape-like offenses (regardless of the age of the victim), respectively.

According to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA):

The offenses for which registration is required under the SORNA standards include any “specified offense against a minor” as defined in section 111(7). The SORNA § 111(7) definition of specified offense against a minor covers any offense against a minor.i.e., a person under the age of 18, as provided in section 111(14). That involves any of the following:

KIDNAPPING OR FALSE IMPRISONMENT OF A MINOR (§ 111(7)(A)-(B)): These clauses cover “[a]n offense (unless committed by a parent or guardian) involving kidnapping [of a minor]” and “[a]n offense (unless committed by a parent or guardian) involving false imprisonment [of a minor].” The relevant offenses are those whose gravamen is abduction or unlawful restraint of a person, which go by different names in different jurisdictions, such as “kidnapping,” “criminal restraint,” or “false imprisonment.” Jurisdictions can implement the offense coverage requirement of these clauses by requiring registration for persons convicted of offenses of this type (however designated) whose victims were below the age of 18. It is left to jurisdictions’ discretion under these clauses whether registration should be required for such offenses in cases where the offender is a parent or guardian of the victim.

SOLICITATION OF A MINOR TO ENGAGE IN SEXUAL CONDUCT (§ 111(7)(C)): This clause covers “[s]olicitation [of a minor] to engage in sexual conduct.” “Solicitation” under this clause and other SORNA provisions that use the term should be understood broadly to include any direction, request, enticement, persuasion, or encouragement of a minor to engage in sexual conduct. “Sexual conduct” should be understood to refer to any sexual activity involving physical contact. (See the discussion later in this list of “criminal sexual conduct” under section 111(7)(H).) Hence, jurisdictions can implement the offense coverage requirement under this clause by requiring registration, in cases where the victim was below the age of 18, based on:

- any conviction for an offense involving solicitation of the victim under a general attempt or solicitation provision, where the elements of the object offense include sexual activity involving physical contact, and

- any conviction for an offense involving solicitation of the victim under any provision defining a particular crime whose elements include soliciting or attempting to engage in sexual activity involving physical contact.

USE OF A MINOR IN A SEXUAL PERFORMANCE (§ 111(7)(D)): This clause covers offenses involving “[u]se [of a minor] in a sexual performance.” That includes both live performances and using minors in the production of pornography, and has some overlap with section 111(7)(G), which expressly covers child pornography offenses.

SOLICITATION OF A MINOR TO PRACTICE PROSTITUTION (§ 111(7)(E)): This clause covers offenses involving “[s]olicitation [of a minor] to practice prostitution.” Jurisdictions can implement the offense coverage requirement under this clause by requiring registration, in cases where the victim was below the age of 18, based on:

- any conviction for an offense involving solicitation of the victim under a general attempt or solicitation provision, where the object offense is a prostitution offense, and

- any conviction for an offense involving solicitation of the victim under any provision defining a particular crime whose elements include soliciting or attempting to get a person to engage in prostitution.

VIDEO VOYEURISM INVOLVING A MINOR (§ 111(7)(F)): This clause covers “[v]ideo voyeurism as described in section 1801 of title 18, United States Code [against a minor].” The cited federal offense in essence covers capturing the image of a private area of another person’s body, where the victim has a reasonable expectation of privacy against such conduct. Jurisdictions can implement the offense coverage requirement under this clause by requiring registration for offenses of this type, in cases where the victim was below the age of 18.

POSSESSION, PRODUCTION, OR DISTRIBUTION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY (§ 111(7)(G)): This clause covers “possession, production, or distribution of child pornography.” Jurisdictions can implement the offense coverage requirement under this clause by requiring registration for offenses whose gravamen is creating or participating in the creation of sexually explicit visual depictions of persons below the age of 18, making such depictions available to others, or having or receiving such depictions.

CRIMINAL SEXUAL CONDUCT INVOLVING A MINOR AND RELATED INTERNET ACTIVITIES (§ 111(7)(H)): This clause covers “[c]riminal sexual conduct involving a minor, or the use of the Internet to facilitate or attempt such conduct.” The definition has two parts:

- The “criminal sexual conduct involving a minor” language in this definition covers sexual offenses whose elements involve physical contact with the victim. Such as provisions defining crimes of “rape,” “sexual assault,” “sexual abuse,” or “incest”. In cases where the victim was below 18 at the time of the offense. In addition, it covers offenses whose elements involve using other persons in prostitution. Such as provisions defining crimes of “pandering,” “procuring,” or “pimping”. In cases where the victim was below 18 at the time of the offense. Coverage is not limited to cases where the victim’s age is an element of the offense, such as prosecution for specially defined child molestation or child prostitution offenses. Jurisdictions can implement the offense coverage requirement under the “criminal sexual conduct involving a minor” language of this clause by requiring registration for “criminal sexual conduct” offenses as described above whenever the victim was in fact below the age of 18 at the time of the offense. (Section 111(7)(C) and (E) separately require coverage of offenses involving solicitation of a minor to engage in sexual conduct or to practice prostitution, but registration must be required for offenses involving sexual conduct with a minor or the use of a minor in prostitution in light of section 111(7)(H), whether or not the offense involves “solicitation” of the victim.)

- Jurisdictions can implement the “use of the Internet to facilitate or attempt such conduct” part of this definition by requiring registration for offenses that involve use of the Internet in furtherance of criminal sexual conduct involving a minor as defined above, such as attempting to lure minors through Internet communications for the purpose of sexual activity.

CONDUCT BY ITS NATURE A SEX OFFENSE AGAINST A MINOR (§ 111(7)(I)): The final clause covers “[a]ny conduct that by its nature is a sex offense against a minor.” It is intended to ensure coverage of convictions under statutes defining sexual offenses in which the status of the victim as a minor is an element of an offense, such as specially defined child molestation or child prostitution offenses, and other offenses prohibiting sexual activity with underage persons. Jurisdictions can comply with the offense coverage requirement under this clause by including convictions for such offenses in their registration requirements.

When prevention and knowledge is your best defense against victimization, and the registry can provide information on, say, sex offenders in your neighborhood, it’s a tool you’ll want at your fingertips.

The Amber Alert Portal is currently working with states to further enforce this registration, with the possible implementation of a “Predator Alert” system to inform members of law enforcement, the media and the public when these offenders go missing.

You can sign up to receive Amber Alerts on your mobile/ cell phone or email inbox. As well, you get an Amber Alert Child ID Kit to document important information/ photos of your child as a protective measure.

I just purchased one of those all-in-one devices (guess you call it a “smartphone“) that combine the features of a PDA and cellular telephone.

It’s a nifty little gadget that’s sure to help me organize my life and be more productive every day. Although these devices have been around for a while now, they’re still a bit on the expensive side. I spent several hundred dollars on my new mobile device, and I’m constantly worried about scratching, dropping, or otherwise damaging it. Obviously what I need to do here is start shopping for cell phone skins in order to ease my anxiety a bit.

Actually, I browsed through some cell phone skins right at the store where I bought my device in the first place. But since my cell phone is one of the newest ones out there, the store didn’t have a skin that would fit it. I even continued to shop for cell phone skins later that day in different stores inside the mall I was at, but with similar results. My device was just too new.

I checked back at those same stores about a week later, but still couldn’t find the right cell phone skins. One of the sales clerks I talked to could tell I was frustrated, so he suggested that I shop for cell phone skins online. He said that these days it’s not unusual for web-based stores to get their hands on new products and start selling them before traditional stores. I thought that sounded pretty reasonable, so I got a few website addresses from the guy and went home to check them out.

I was surprised to see that the store clerk was absolutely correct. The websites he pointed me to did indeed have a wide selection of brand new cell phone skins to choose from. These cell phone skins were for all the latest devices, and I was able to find my model listed on the site. After doing some quick price comparisons and finding the best deal on cell phone skins, I made my purchase on the spot.

Now that my new cellular device is protected by one of the very best cell phone skins available, I can use it without having to worry about incidental damage or even ordinary wear and tear. I can’t believe I went as long as I did without using a skin; that just seems like a sure way to ruin an expensive gadget.

At any rate, I did learn a valuable lesson here. The next time I need a product or accessory that is brand new to the market, I’ll shop for it online instead of wasting my efforts at local stores!

Because I feel it is so important, I’ve decided to post another article on the Amber Alert program, this time focusing on what’s called the Amber Alert Child ID Kit.

The Kit is not physical in the sense of something you can hold in your hand, at least not all of it. Actually, the kit is USB device, loaded with a software program that was developed to make it easy for parents and guardians to use.

In the event of an emergency, you simply present the USB device to a law enforcement agent and provide them with the password so they can quickly start the process for issuing an Amber Alert.

The process begins when local law enforcement is notified that a child has been abducted. They verify that the abduction meets AMBER Alert criteria. If it does, they will issue an actual AMBER Alert and provides the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) with relevant information to include in the outgoing Alert.

AMBER Alert designed and developed the software using their in-depth experience with the requirements of law enforcement agencies, and by evaluating other ID Kits on the market. Kingston Technology, the worlds leading supplier of memory products, provides the USB device (hardware) for the Child ID Kit.

No one is suggesting that your child will be abducted, go missing or get lost. The possibility exists, however, since “children run a mile a second.” The software was created primarily for emergency situations where time is of the essence, and the more prepared you are (before the fact), the faster law enforcement can proceed with finding your child (after the fact).

The Kingston USB device is only 2.5″ long making it very easy to attach to your key chain to carry with you or keep in a safe place. Also, the device is password protected and encrypted, so if you lose it, no one can access that information without your password and there are no “back doors.” If you forget your password, the Child ID Kit has to be reset and you’ll loose all the information previously stored on it. Hence, it is highly recommended that you remember the password for the Child ID Kit.

Again, when/ if you find yourself in an emergency, you should give the Child ID Kit with the password to the police. The police will then use the information for their investigation and attempt to issue an AMBER Alert.

According to Amber Alert,

“With the Child ID Kit you can easily keep [an] old photo and simply add a newer one, at the same time update the information. Some organizations offer similar devices to the AMBER Alert.com Child ID Kit, for example they will give you an option to send information over the internet (unsecure).

You will need a personal or laptop computer that runs Microsoft Windows, and has an open USB port — these are quite common on most recent computers. Just insert the Child ID Kit (i.e., the USB device) into the port and wait for the software to launch automatically. There is no need to install any software, nor is any internet connection needed. The Child ID Kit has a memory of 512MB, which is large enough to hold up to 100 photos of your child!

Children grow pretty fast, so they recommend you update your child’s information and photos either every six months or once a year on your child’s birthday. And, for those who want to take matters a step further: Under the heading “Support,” they provide ideas that may help you find where to fingerprint, scan or even get DNA samples of your child in your local area!

And, of course, if you’d like to read more, we’ve got more information on the Wireless Amber Alert service provided by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Thanks for caring!

A <a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/<a+href='http://www.cell-phone-usa.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-affiliate-pro.php?id=26'+target="_blank">smartphone" rel="tag">smartphone is an electronic handheld device representing a class of handsets with a mobile operating system such as Symbian, Microsoft OS, RIM or Palm. You might think of a smartphone as a mobile phone, one that has built-in features and functionalities in its handset that makes it a mobile information center and entertainment device for the user.

You might also think of a smartphone as a hybrid device, one that has all the features of a mobile phone and most of the features of a personal digital assistant (PDA) such as calendar, e-mail, Web browsing and office applications. Smartphones are one of the fastest growing segments in the consumer devices market.

Typically, smartphones can take care of your communication, handheld computing, and multimedia needs. Unlike traditional cellphones, a smartphone offers a personal information manager (PIM), functionality (e.g., contacts, calendars, and tasks) and allows professionals to install and run assorted computer applications that can edit documents, search the Internet, and retrieve information from enterprise servers.

Smartphones are generally designed for one-handed operation, with keypad access to both voice or data features. They are often optimized for voice and text communication, wireless access to MicroSoft Outlook information and encrypted browsing of corporate and Internet information and services. As well, smartphones generally have longer battery lives and cannot be customised quite as much.

” . . . But, if you primarily use only the calendar and contact features of a PDA anyway, something like the Samsung SGH-i600 might be perfect for you…”

- Steve Maclin

Motorola redefined the smartphone category by providing a clip-on personal organizer for its existing StarTAC phones.

Smartphones are equipped with complete operating systems that determine what kinds of functions and applications are available for that device. They provide a convenient way to carry several hand-held digital devices in one body. They allow you to easily sync e-mail accounts so you can get e-mail messages as they arrive on your phone, but they also allow you to view e-mail attachments and click on links in e-mail to the web.

Smartphone2002 and Smartphone2003, made by Microsoft, have great capability, performance and conveniences. But they are not exactly what you would call “license-free.”

Still, from where we stand today, smartphones are slated to become the most prominent personal computers on the planet, ultimately able to do everything that desktop computers currently do. However, there are times when people need a large screen and full-size keyboard.

Smartphones have become increasingly popular because they provide “all-in-one” convenience by integrating traditional mobile phones with handheld computing devices. However, the flexibility of running third-party softwares also leaves the smartphones open to malicious viruses. That’s a little beyond the intended scope of this article, so we’ll only mention this in passing.

Suffice it to say, “smartphones are so smart” because of all we’ve just discussed, and as evidenced by the fact that they are fast becoming the new PDA phones . . . and, because these feature-packed mobile phones are pervasive, they could very easily become the default physical interface for ubiquitous computing applications, providing the foundation for a new, interaction paradigm.

Mobile Computing is very old, but then, it is still a very active and evolving field of research, whose body of knowledge awaits codification. In years past, IBM Researchers made numerous contributions ranging from technology for handheld and notebook computers to Mobile IP. Mobile computing is increasingly becoming more and more popular as people need information (even on the move) in this rapid changing information world. This article will attempt to highlight the concepts and basic issues relating to mobile computing.

Mobile Computing is becoming increasingly relevant due, in no small part, to the rise in the number of portable computers, and as well, in the desire to have continuous network connectivity to the Internet, irrespective of one’s physical location.

Mobile computing is all about providing access to computers and associated computer services while on the move. Ubiquitous computing complements this by surrounding users with very large numbers of computers typically embedded in the physical environment. Mobile computing is concerned with the connection of mobile or portable computers, and with the migration of software from a home platform to a remote one.

In other words, we want (and need) access to computing and communications not only from our home base/ apartment, but also while we’re in transit, and when we reach our respective destinations.

Mobile Computing Around the World

Mobile computing is becoming popular all over the world. Especially, notebook and pocket PCs are playing an important role in mobile computing.

In the typical business environment, mobile computing can be utilized while traveling on an airplane or working in a hotel room. Mobile computing is not a `scaled-down’ version of the established and well-studied field of distributed computing. The nature of wireless communication media and the mobility of computers combine to create fundamentally new problems in networking, operating systems, and information systems.

Mobile computing is rapidly rising to the top of the strategic investment list within many enterprises. These enterprises see the competitive advantage to a mobile computing business that includes mobilizing their existing enterprise applications and implementing new mobile applications.

In many respects, mobile computing has already exploded — but, if you want a peek at its imminent future, check out a smartphone, like the Nokia N95. Mobile Computing is expected to be next major paradigm in the evolution of computing. Technological advances are bringing about two major changes that have the potential to reshape the existing network computing into mobile computing. Mobile computing’s associated with the concept of any-time/ any place access to information and computation resources. Timely information, like what’s provide below:

Friday Traffic Report (0)

Loading…

Now, if we consider the Web as today’s biggest, distributed information system, it seems only natural to add mobility to the web and a lot of research efforts and developments have been undertaken towards a “mobile web.”

Tags: public records, online security, smartphone, ipod, iphone

Cell phone companies must develop winning strategies that capture the hearts, minds, and wallets of the younger generation. My interviews suggest they are influenced by different advertising media than elder generations. Companies that “do technology right” but “get marketing wrong” . . . fail.

Companies that have obviously succeeded, such as Motorola, offer their customers an elaborate range of different ways to personalize their cell phones, from various carrying cases to fancy jewelry. The iPod and iPhone, by the way, have become popular in part because of their users’ ability to customize the devices. Companies began to put pressure on their advertising agencies to create “emotional and spiritual” appeal.

Considered one of the masters of creating emotional connections, the Motorola RAZR is arguably one of the most popular cell phone designs in recent memory.

Since its inception, it has sold like the proverbial hotcakes for all the major carriers. A friend of mine who owns one really finds it cool and even brags about the unit’s many features.

The Motorola RAZR Series: A Taste of Perfection

The Motorola RAZR V3x features SCREEN3*, an innovative technology solution from Motorola that gives you zero-click access to news, sports, entertainment, and other premium content directly from your mobile device home screen — no buttons to push, no browsers to launch. Motorola’s SCREEN3 puts fresh content at your fingertips. The RAZR V3 is an absolute steal for someone looking for basic features packaged into a high-end looking handset.

The video below, shot in a Hong Kong high-rise, probably overstates the case, but suffice it to say, the Motorola RAZR series of cellphones are chock full of innovation! They’re “heavy-duty”!!

Models from the new RAZR series are loaded with all up to date technologies while maintaining the same slim casings. Modelled after the legendary Motorola RAZR V3, the RAZR V3i has an updated and streamlined design, offering consumers a large internal color screen, quad-band technology and Bluetooth wireless technology. Designed for an enhanced imaging experience, this sleek handset comes complete with an integrated 1.23 megapixel digital camera with a full screen view-finder, zoom, and video capture and playback.

The Motorola RAZR V3i is fully loaded, delivering the ultimate combination of design and technology. Beneath that sculpted metal exterior is a lean mean, globehopping machine. The Motorola RAZR is one of the most popular mobile phones available. It is one of the slimmest phones on the market, yet still packs in an amazing amount of functions and performance. The Motorola RAZR V3 weighs 3.35 ounces and measures 3.86 x 2.09 x .54 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 6.67 hours of digital talk time, and up to 250 hours of digital standby time.

What many have failed to notice, is that the Motorola RAZR V3i is the first update to the wildly popular AT&T RAZR, and that it brings plenty of new features to the table. Starting with an MP3 player for use with iTunes, and including an upgraded camera with enhanced video capture abilities, as well as an expandable memory card slot for storing your multimedia. The Motorola RAZR V3i pretty much has the same design as the V3, except for its colors. The V3i has a slim body measuring 98 x 53 x 14 mm in size and weighs 100 grams.

The Motorola RAZR V3 is convenient in size, and offers satisfying MPEG4 video playback, video capture, Bluetooth and digital camera capabilities. Another great selection from Motorola is the newer ROKR, which allows users to play, sort, store and maintain music on their very own iTunes Digital Jukebox. Cool!!

The Motorola Razr V3 has already proven to be very successful, and very popular. Initially selling for about $500 when it was first released, the price has recently dropped down to a new low of $0 - i.e., Free (when signing up for new Cingular or T-mobile service, and if purchased through Amazon).

The Motorola RAZR V3c also offers certain profiles of Bluetooth wireless technology, an office-quality speakerphone, and up to 30 megabytes of embedded memory. Weighing in at a mere 3.49 ounces, the surprisingly slim Motorola RAZR V3c balances its productivity tools with a 1.3 megapixel digital camera, video record and playback and speech recognition capability. The Motorola RAZR V3xx are great phones with high class functions and an easily recognized style that everyone is envious over. As prices continue to fall, you should add the Motorola RAZR V3xx to your wish list.

Still, some feel that the Motorola RAZR was supplanted/ killed by the iPhone. I don’t agree! What do you think??

It’s 2008, and cell phones are no longer a luxury but a necessity, enabling Americans to be ever available to our friends, colleagues and relatives.

Even Darth Vader values cell phones (after all, they allow him to always know where his kids are). Here’s the thing: if you experience a difficult situation, you can call rescue workers.

As a non-Japanese speaking American, living in Tokyo (a few years ago), I’d rely on cell phones to ride the trains. I’d call an American friend who spoke fluent Japanese and explain to him where I was and where I wanted to go. Then, I’d give the phone to one of the Japanese train operators and my friend would explain to him what I wanted to do. The operator would give instructions to my friend in Japanese, and hand the phone back to me; then my friend would explain what I needed to do in English. Problem solved, all because I carried a cell phone! In Japan, I observed 5-6 year old children using cell phones to ride the trains back in the late 90s!

Kids, anywhere, can use their kiddie cell phones to let their parents know where they are, when they need to be picked up, when they’ll be late, and just generally what’s happening.

Some U.S. government sources would lead us to believe, however, that cell phones are particularly problematic, as compared to stationary devices and may facilitate intra- and inter-ward (and perhaps inter-hospital) transmissions.

Additionally, they are concerned about the potential for nosocomial transmission of MDR pathogens by other electronic devices, such as handheld computers or personal digital assistants (PDAs), with bedside applications.

I would argue, to the contrary, that cell phones are not nearly as dangerous as many people think. There is no conclusive evidence that they cause cancer. And, when compared to the good they provide for society — cell phones, in addition to being useful in mobile emergencies, are often refurbished, recycled or resold when possible. A portion of the proceeds received from the resale benefits select charities, e.g., Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Matter of fact, cell phones are more prevalent as a sign of “development” in Tibet than are toilets.

And, for what its worth, cell phones are also extremely popular among kids in Europe. The majority of Britain’s 7-to-16-year-olds have cell phones, as do 75 percent of teenagers in Scandinavia. Cell phones are going to be able to read RFID tags, which are cheap disposable tags that contain information about a product. In the future items in a store will all contain these tags and your phone will have a built in RFID reader so you’ll be able to quickly assess product information.

Cell phones, IMHO, are here to stay; they have become the leading icon of the information age. As a volunteer, working with tweens and teens, it’s good to visit their “mobile” world.

Apparently, our Canadian friends seem to “get it” … I found the above clip from CBC-TV’s “Cell Phone: The Ring Heard Around the World,” aired in Canada on April 3, in which Professor Paul Levinson talks about the intersection of the Obama, and the cell phone, revolutions . . . .

Barack Obama has been intelligently using cell phone technology (not to mention, mobile computing and web 2.0 technology — I know because I’m on his mailing list) to communicate and motivate the American populace like no other presidential candidate ever has. The effectiveness of his campaign has proven out in his superb numbers.

If you want to read more along these lines, you might want to view this clip from CBC-TV’s “Cell Phone: The Ring Heard Around the World.” See this video clip for the complete program. Also, see this website for more on Professor Levinson’s book, Cell Phone: The Story of the World’s Most Mobile Medium, and How It Has Transformed Everything.

Personally, I think it’s nice to hear that so many Canadians have been paying close attention to what Dr. Levinson calls the “cell phone revolution,” and especially to the American Presidential elections; many people, both here and there, are already convinced that Barack Obama will be our next President. What do you think?

After signing up to receive Wireless AMBER Alerts, you'll receive a text message welcoming you to the program. Wireless AMBER Alerts come through as text...

How Wireless AMBER Alerts Are Sent:
The process begins when local law enforcement is notified that a child has been abducted. They verify that the abduction meets AMBER Alert criteria. If it does, they will issue an actual AMBER Alert and provides the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) with relevant information to include in the outgoing Alert.

NCMEC formats the AMBER Alert message, sends it electronically to Syniverse who, in turn, passes it onto Wireless carriers. Wireless carriers (like AT&T, Alltel, T-Mobile, Cricket and others) have stepped up and volunteered to send AMBER Alert messages, as text messages, to subscribers like you.

How to Sign Up to Receive Wireless AMBER Alerts:
The quickest and easiest way to sign up and receive Wireless AMBER Alerts is to visit this link www.WirelessamberAlerts.org (you’ll see a similar solicitation on the side of the van, pictured just to your right). Once you’re there, just enter your Wireless/ cell phone number. Take a few minutes to skim the Terms and Conditions of the Wireless AMBER Alerts program, press “Accept,” then press “Complete Subscription.”

What’s really important is that you’ll want to enter the zip code for your home or place of employment, because that enables them to send AMBER Alerts for children missing in your specific area. You can enter up to 5 zip codes if you travel extensively, by the way. Oh, you’ll also need to either come up with a password, or have the website assign one for you.

After that, you’ll be officially enrolled in the AMBER Alerts initiative! The Wireless AMBER Alerts service is free, and there is no charge to enroll. You only receive AMBER Alerts for your given area, and if you haven’t already, you might want to think about it this way — you might just help save a life!

* How Do I Sign Up, Just Using my Cell Phone?
First, you’ll just text the word AMBER, followed by a space and your five-digit zip code, to 26237. You’ll get a reply confirming your enrollment. Then, if you decide to unsubscribe, just send STOP to 26237.

Again, the Wireless AMBER Alerts service is free, and there is no charge whatsoever to enroll.

* Most, but not all, wireless customers can register by cell phone.

How Wireless AMBER Alerts Affect Your Phone:
After signing up to receive Wireless AMBER Alerts, you’ll receive a text message welcoming you to the program. Wireless AMBER Alerts come through as text messages, and will appear on your wireless device/ phone the same way as any other text message. Of course, you’ll receive a text message notifying you when a given AMBER Alert is canceled (could either be because the child was found, or for some other reason). Note that one of the most important things you can do to protect your child from abduction is to get the official AMBER Alert Child ID Kit.

I’m not suggesting that your child will be one of 780,000 children each year who are reported abducted, missing or lost. However, in the event the AmberAlert.com Child ID Kit is needed, you’ll have everything you need to help law enforcement get on-task as soon as possible. The kits run about $30, and the kids they protect are priceless.

Finally, you can rest assured that you’ll only receive AMBER Alerts (no advertisements or anything else) from their organization, and only those that alerts will apply to missing children in the area in which you enroll. So, it’s a really good thing to do!
